Start of a »Project Pan« series | #01

Makeup / Tuesday, November 19th, 2019

When I first heard of »Project panning« in the makeup community, it didn’t sound appealing to me at all. Why should I enjoy using up and blighting the beauty of  a product I love? Or am I supposed to force myself to use up a product I actually don’t like?

But then I remembered that products do have a certain shelf life and/or expiration date – which I bet most people don’t care too much about when it regards products for their own personal use. Or do you? Well, expired products carry health risks which isn’t fun at all. So if a product still smells, looks and performs the same as when it was brand new, you can keep using it at your own risk if you don’t experience skin reactions – I’m definitely not one to tell you what to do. With that being said, I admittedly have the mascaras I’ll be showing you open for longer than I should. Yep, I said it! Cause I try to be honest here. 😀 I can still toss them anytime if I don’t feel comfortable anymore.

Another thing I learned about »Project panning« is that many seem to prefer putting products in their project that they like and trust, but that don’t have much sentimental value to them. That sounds way more realistic and approachable to me than what I assumed at first. This project can help with becoming a more mindful consumer, downsizing your collection, learning how long it takes you to finish a certain type of product and getting your money’s worth of the products you already own.

Now I have to mention the people who inspired me to take the plunge and »join«: It’s Kat @kitschnitch and Hailey @justbuythemakeup who both run the YouTube channel Beauty News together but had their own personal channels way before that one was created. Go check them out and leave some love! <3

My rules

As y’all can tell, I don’t follow a typical plan: It’s neither the beginning of a new year nor it’s the start of a new month. I’m just starting now, from November 20th, because I want to. I don’t want to put lots of pressure and stress on myself and instead keep everything more fun! I plan on doing monthly check-ins and will allow myself to switch out products then. If I use up a product from my project or want to toss it, I’ll be looking for another product in my collection to take its place. I’m using only cruelty-free and vegan products but I will include products I like that are from brands that, due to ethical reasons such as bullying, racism etc., I no longer support.

The products I’m starting with:

Pacifica Stellar Gaze Mascara and Milk Makeup Kush Mascara
I enjoy these mascaras for my top lashes (read my review), but it’s getting old and I want to see how much use I can still get out of it. I think I would not repurchase any of them.

Essence Lash Base Mascara
I enjoy this mascara as a primer for more thin mascara formulas, but it’s getting old. Also, Essence either reformulated it already or just updated the packaging. If I run out of this time, I’ll hopefully be able to compare both!

Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer (C2)
I really enjoy this concealer as it has such a nice skin-like finish on me, doesn’t necessarily have to be set and has decent coverage. It’s almost empty so I want to make sure I use this one up before I open a new one. I would repurchase it, but I want to try out a different one next.

Catrice Eye Foundation Primer
This primer works well and makes a big difference – but it’s not the perfect one for me. I have oily lids and want to find something more heavy-duty. This tube is almost empty and I don’t think I’ll repurchase it. I plan on making a comparison (photo documentation) of the ones I currently own!

Terra mere Anti-Aging Shadow Base
This primer works well and makes a difference, but there are absolutely way better ones out there. Yet, I want to use as much of it as possible before it expires. I would not repurchase it.

Essence Glitter Primer
This one is weird – I either have a dud or still have to find out how to make it work. I haven’t used it much as the consistency is super watery and it didn’t feel sticky when swatching it on my hand. It’s getting old so I better try it out now before I have to toss it.

100% Pure Lip Glaze “Vixen”
I really like the sheer formula, but I don’t wear a lot of pink on my lips. Since I don’t want this lipstick to go off before I used at least the majority of it, I plan on layering on top of other products to mute the pink a bit. I would repurchase this product in a different colour. Scroll down for a swatch!

Colourpop Super Shock Shadows in “Wattles” and “Cuteologist”
I love the colour of these ones a lot and “Wattles” (the rose-mauve one) has such a beautiful satin shine to it. “Cuteologist” is in the “ultra-glitter” formula and is a matte brick red/orange with gold glitter. Both make super nice grungy “dead girl” looks applied with fingers. However, both of them are already super dry (it’s usually a wet-feeling formula) so I want to find out how much use I can still get out of them. I might repurchase “Wattles” someday if I don’t find a dupe in a pressed eyeshadow formula – not sure yet about “Cuteologist”. Scroll down for swatches!

KvD Blotting Powder “Fair”
I don’t support Kat von D anymore since her coming-out as an anti-vaxxer and discovering her and her husband’s links to anti-semitism. I like this product, but I’m sure there might be even better pressed (translucent) powders out there – or equivalent ones from less problematic brands. 😉 When I run out of this product, I plan on reusing the sturdy compact (it has a nice mirror) because the pan is removable with a needle from the bottom – any magnetic pan in this size or smaller should fit in there. I’m happy to receive recommendations for alternatives already!

NUI Cosmetics Liquid Natural Foundation “Intense Kanapa”
I really like this foundation as it’s matte but really skin-like looking, has some coverage and doesn’t seem to contain environmentally harmful ingredients. I’m not a foundation person so I rarely wear one. The colour range of this foundation lacks yellow/olive undertones (that I have) as well as shades for deep skintones. I have to mix this foundation with green concealer to reduce the peachy undertone and match my body. Therefore there’s still quite a lot in this glass bottle and the product is getting old. I don’t know if I would repurchase it unless they extended their colour range.

Limecrime Plushies “Marmalade”
This formula is a comfortable sheer matte liquid lipstick that looks beautiful dabbed out with fingers, creating a blurry lipline. It can also work on top of other products. I love orange tones but since I have naturally pink lips, the colour doesn’t come out as warm as I had hoped for. That’s why I don’t wear it enough. It’s getting old so I try to incorporate into looks more often and use it combined with other products or as liquid blush. I would repurchase it in another colour. Scroll down for a swatch!

Colourpop Lippie Pencil “Wet”
This colour is currently discontinued, but I still have a backup of it. It’s similar to OCC “Sebastian” liner and probably more brown than Linda Hallberg’s “Greige” Crayon. It might be a dupe for MAC “Stone”? I’m sure there are comparison swatches somewhere. It’s a handy neutral colour than can be used to contou the lips no matter what colour you want to put on top (unless you want a super dark one). I like it, but the packaging is horrible. The product slides up and down in the sharpenable plastic tube which is incredibly inconvenient. On top of that, it’s getting old so I want to see how much I can use it before I get too frustrated and toss it. I would not repurchase it if it came back in stock unless Colourpop updated the packaging.

Linda Hallberg Cosmetics Crayon “Calm”
I adore this colour and liked the smooth formula it originally had. It was never as perfectly smooth and buttery as the “Cool” Crayon I own though. The “Calm” Crayon is not new to my collection but I was surprised it already dried out a bit while most other Crayons I own are still fine. Maybe I once forgot to put the cap back on or it’s because the product one day started to slide out of the wooden(?) tube. It’s still usable, so I want to use it as much as possible before it’s totally dried out! I would definitely repurchase it. Scroll down for a swatch!
