Clionadh multichromes: Swatches of my current favourites

Makeup / Sunday, November 21st, 2021

Hello, long time no see! My collection of multichrome eyeshadows by Clionadh Cosmetics, a cruelty-free and vegan Canadian Indie brand, has grown a bit during the last 1.5 years which is why I’ve been receiving lots of requests on my makeup account @sounthie for swatches, comparisons and recommendations – especially since they currently have a site-wide sale. It’s been difficult to narrow it down to only a few shades, so my current favourites are no less than 9 shades! 😅

I don’t own pressed multichrome eyeshadows from any other brand, but I’ve seen YouTubers comparing similar shades from different brands stating that their Clionadh eyeshadows are amongst the best and most reflective ones. That’s of course not an objective observation, so make up your own mind. Let’s get to the video or scroll straight down to the swatches!

(the embedded video will appear here shortly)

Arm swatches

I swatched all shades onto moisturized skin with my fingers and used smudge-proof bases for the shades that are semi-sheer to almost transparent unless light hits it. I build the swatches up a little bit in order to have full stripes wrapped around the visible part of my arm.

The true black base (Danessa Myricks Colorfix »Blackout«, received in PR) I laid down is definitely the most interesting for those sheer shades, while the other bases showcase the effect on bright colours (royal blue, red) and on a tonal depth in between my fair skintone and that black (I used Dose of Colors liquid lipstick »Cork«). On my photos below, you can see how transparent the iridescent shades actually are: When built up, only »UV« looks transparent on my skintone. »Ray« has the most noticeable base colour to me (mint blue) because of the high contrast to any skin undertone when looking at a colour wheel. The last three iridescent shades all have a subtle peachy pink base which is the least noticeable for »Halo«. Keep in mind that they, as aforementioned, are built up and would still look colourful and reflective with a more thin layer.

Clionadh has a category of iridescent shades with a sheer brown base specifically meant to accomodate brown and black skintones (BIPOC). I love that and I hope more brands will follow suit! Click here to see it. I currently don’t own any of them but I just ordered »Ochre« because I’m a sucker for those yellow to green shifts… 🥰

Finger swatches

On each finger, I swatched the shades with the most similarity in colour shift. I like how the curved surface brings out the different shifts and base colours! Click/tap through the photo carousel to compare them. The following text lists the shade names from top to bottom.

Pinky: Smoulder, Ray, Kiln
Ring finger: Halo, Throne
Middle finger: UV, Enamel
Index finger: Glint, Spectrum

Solo portraits

Let’s look at all the shades more in depth! I created an info box for each including the price, a gorgeous photo of the pan (I’m so proud of these, they look so pretty ❤️), other photos and my ranking of the light reflectivion level (might be subject to change) as well as a brief description of the texture. Enjoy!

»Smoulder«

Light reflection level:
3.5/5

Colour shift: purple — pinkredorangeyellow — green
Base color: semi-opaque black
Texture: Smooth metallic, slightly dry/loose, good adhesion to the skin

This is a very common multichrome colourway on the market because its shift is very apparent due to the broad colour spectrum. These pigments are more expensive which reflects in Clionadh’s pricing. »Smoulder« is definitely a showstopper! An easy way to wear this colour is by using it as an eyeliner.

»Kiln«

Light reflection level:
3/5

Colour shift: pink — redorange — yellow
Base color: almost opaque black
Texture: Smooth metallic, creamy thus great adherence to the skin

This shade has a smaller colour spectrum than »Smoulder« or »Oculus« by Clionadh, but the shift is still very noticeable. The red to gold spectrum is also pretty easy to incorporate into a look by using warm brown or orange mattes blending into a black.

»Throne«

Light reflection level:
1.5/5

Colour shift: pink — red — orange — yellow — lime green
Base color: almost opaque bright yellow, looks almost neon
Texture: Smooth but pretty dry and loosely pressed, soft shimmer, good adherence to the skin

This shade doesn’t reflect much light, however the orange reflect is still noticeable. I just adore the colour and how soft it is! Since it’s not a metallic, it doesn’t accentuate texture on the eyelid much at all. The light colour makes it easy to use while the base colour is bright and fun! Very unique. I wish it was pressed more firmly or that it would feel more creamy in general so that it wouldn’t crack so easily when applying pressure to the pan, but since the base colour is so close to a neon (which are notoriously dry and difficult), I understand that this actually might not be possible. I apply it with a finger! 💛

»Enamel«

Light reflection level:
4/5

Colour shift: (aqua) blue — purple — pink
Base color: sheer periwinkle blue
Texture: Very small glitter particles, semi-opaque, little adherence to dry skin thus can create fallout

I just adore this blurple colour so much! It’s very shiny and is best applied on a sticky base or with a damp brush. Make sure to use a flat and not a fluffy brush and tap off any loose bits before packing it onto your eye to avoid glitter fallout. Despite the small colour spectrum, the shift is still easily noticeable. It’ so pretty and sparkly and totally worth the ≈ 7 € to me!

»UV«

Light reflection level:
4/5

Colour shift: indigo bluepurple — pink
Base color: almost transparent, a super sheer pastel yellow
Texture: Smooth but sparkly metallic, okay adherence to the skin, rather dry

This is such a gem. Have you seen how intense and dark the indigo/blurple reflect is? It looks epic when it’s out of focus. One of my most used Clionadh shadows/multichromes!

»Ray«

Light reflection level:
3.5/5

Colour shift: pink — redorangeyellow — lime green
Base color: super sheer mint blue
Texture: Smooth but slightly sparkly metallic, almost opaque reflect, great adherence to the skin

This is one of my most used multichromes! I just love the red reflect in it. I’ve used it as an highlighter as well and the shift to yellow is easily noticeable when you’re tilting your head. Just keep in mind that this is not the most smooth and finely milled texture out there so it looks a bit sparkly when blended out which, of course, is not everyone’s cup of tea. Use it in the inner corner or as a topper instead. 🌟

»Halo«

Light reflection level:
3.5/5

Colour shift: red — orangeyellow — green
Base color: almost invisible peachy pink
Texture: Smooth but slightly sparkly metallic, great adherence to the skin

This is such a beautiful shade to me because I love the combination of orange and green! There’s not much to say because it’s just a really nice one. 😁 I compared this shade with the multichrome highlight from Kaleidos and a shade of the Twin Flame formula from Danessa Myricks in an Instagram post because they all have somewhat similar main colours. It is linked/embedded below:

»Spectrum«

Light reflection level:
4/5

Colour shift: yellow — green — teal green
Base color: super sheer peachy pink
Texture: Sparkly metallic, soft and a bit loose in the pan, great adherence to the skin

Green is my favourite colour and this shade is primarily a warm green = a win! I love it in my inner corners. My pan is a bit cracked so it might not be the best formula to bring with you when traveling… 😅

»Glint«

Light reflection level:
4.5/5

Colour shift: yellow — green — blue
Base color: super sheer peachy pink
Texture: Obviously glittery, high shine, rather soft, okay adherence to the skin

This the most reflective one out of the bunch I presented to you! It has a lot of impact so it’s not a subtle choice at all. 😁  I love the blue shift. I’d highly recommend to apply it with your fingers or onto a sticky base. It doesn’t get the 5 stars because I have a really chunky glittery one by Clionadh, also in the Glitter-Type Iridescent category, that looks super foiled (which reminds me of those flakies some indie brands sell, or gold leaf).

So, what do you think of these? Have you tried multichrome makeup already, are you still unsure if you want to make a purchase or are you just intrigued by seeing these magical pigments in photos? Anything is valid so please don’t feel any pressure to buy something you don’t need. However, seeing these multichrome pigments in person feels like jewelry to me. I sometimes just like to look at them and swatch them because they are so fascinating to me. 🥺

Announcement: I’m currently working on getting swatch photos of all the other shades I own from Clionadh onto my blog. It will be a separate post dedicated to that. Stay tuned on my Instagram account! 💖
